Leggings - they originally designed as two separate hose in the 13th century as a way to keep me warm and protect against chafing during battles.
They came to be popularised in the 1980's thanks to movies such as flashdance, when women began wearing them with oversized t-shirts and mini skirts. They managed to stay in fashion for more than a decade until people started investing in mirrors and realising how ridiculous they actually looked.
However, as we all know, fashion is ever changing. What is one decades old news is another's big news! Women everywhere breathed a sigh or relief in 2005 when they were bought back into fashion, wondering why they ever turned their back on them.
I won't lie, I do remember my first pair. They were the capri length white ones, I wore them with a short, strapless white dress (it was a nice dress, honestly) on my 17th birthday. What once was designed to keep us warm or protect us during exercise were once again big news in the fashion industry.
Not only were we wearing them in different lengths but new styles came out, from floral to wet look (I won't even go there). Six years on, they are still a best selling basic item in many high street retailers.
When teamed with an oversized t-shirt, converse and a smart blazer, leggings can look quite good, as long as this is worn during the day time. But when I see girls wearing them on a night out, or even during they daytime but with heels...ughh it actually gives me a headache.
I find myself sometimes wanting to reach out to random girls in the street and shake some fashion sense into them. The ONLY time it should be deemed socially acceptable to wear leggings with heels is when they are stirruped or if the top of the shoe covers the bottom of the legging. Seriously girls, this sort of look is what the stylists on Jeremy Kyle look for!
As for leggings worn during a night out...it seems to me they are a substitute for girls too cheap to invest in a decent pair of skinny jeans, or those so not bothered about how they look that they won't even consider wearing tights!
Lastly girls who wear leggings during the day as a substitute for Jeans - that is to say without even having the decency to wear a top or cardi that covers their arse!. Firstly, short of being Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, this does not look good. Bottom's are made up largely of fat, and if they aren't supported properly they are going to wobble. Secondly there is such a thing as VPL, under no circumstance what so ever is VPL a good thing to have on display. My last point is, most of us have seen Hollyoaks right? Unless you want to look like Jaqui McQueen or Cheryl, do us all a favour and get to Topshop and invest in a pair of Jamie's!
